What the Bible Teaches About the Lord’s Supper (Communion)

Jesus gave the Lord’s Supper as a simple, holy ordinance for born-again believers. It reminds us of His death until He returns. This memorial uses unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine. It is not a saving ritual or a transformation of the elements but a fellowship of the Body. Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Leaven represents sin, so we use unleavened bread as a symbol of sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5:7-8). Those who partake must examine themselves in light of the Word (1 Corinthians 11:27-32). The early church pattern was to repent, believe, be baptized, and continue in the apostles’ teaching and breaking of bread (Acts 2:41-42).

I'm wondering how the practice of using unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine shapes our sense of remembrance and unity?

Absolutely, those elements tie us together, reminding us of shared sacrifice and our collective faith journey.

It's clear Communion isn't a saving ritual, yet many churches still imbue it with almost sacramental importance.

I get the fellowship focus, but don't you think dismissing any deeper symbolism risks underestimating its spiritual power?

Maybe small group leaders could offer a brief reflection on Christ's sacrifice before observing the ordinance together to enrich the experience.
