Court Slaps N1m Fine on Plaintiff Over Delays in Jonathan 2027 Disqualification Suit
The Federal High Court in Abuja has fined a plaintiff and his lawyer N1 million each for delaying a suit against former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to run in the 2027 election. Justice Peter Lifu criticised the late service of court papers on INEC and the Attorney-General’s office despite the case being filed in October 2025. He ordered the plaintiff to serve all pending processes within two hours and set a deadline for the defendants’ responses. The matter was adjourned to May 18, 2026, for hearing. Counsel for Jonathan urged dismissal over repeated delays, while the plaintiff’s lawyer apologised for arriving late after a vehicle breakdown.
