DIG Fayoade Denies Ransom Demand, Assures Safe Rescue of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren and Teachers

DIG Fayoade Denies Ransom Demand, Assures Safe Rescue of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren and Teachers

The South-West Coordinating Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, has denied reports that kidnappers of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire LGA of Oyo State have made a ransom demand. He said the police remain focused on securing the victims’ release rather than negotiating with extremists. Speaking during an official visit to the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja, the DIG explained that all security formations are coordinating efforts to locate and free the abductees as quickly and safely as possible. “We don’t talk about ransom,” he stressed. “All efforts are directed towards getting the abductees freed safely.” Fayoade said he toured the command to review tactics, strengthen supervision and discuss manpower, welfare and logistics challenges. He noted ongoing recruitment drives and the adoption of technology-driven tools, including a central data system and AI, to enhance intelligence gathering. He urged officers and the public to work together for effective policing and national security.

It's surprising the DIG is so confident there was never a ransom demand despite previous reports suggesting kidnappers often negotiate.

We can't just assume there's no ransom demand; the police often withhold sensitive details for strategy.
