IMSU Academic Staff Numbers Drop by Half Since 2015, ASUU Owerri Zone Sounds Alarm
The ASUU Owerri Zone Coordinator warns that Imo State University’s academic workforce has fallen from 1,009 in 2015 to just 541 in 2026, leaving the institution severely understaffed. This decline persists despite repeated letters and negotiations with the state government. The union also expressed deep concern over the slow and selective implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. Key elements such as consolidated allowances and the inauguration of the Implementation Monitoring Committee remain stalled, while some state universities in the South East have failed to act on agreed salary and welfare provisions. ASUU calls on federal and state authorities to uphold the spirit of the agreement. They demand full payment of owed allowances, resolution of promotion and pension arrears, and proper funding for research and innovation as outlined in the pact. The union urges governors, university councils, traditional rulers, student groups, labour organisations and civil society to press for immediate action and prevent further disruptions across campuses.
