Oluwo of Iwo Donates ₦2M, Calls on FG to Revive Yoruba Language Education
The Oluwo of Iwoland donated ₦2 million to the Association of Yoruba Language Scholars. He urged the Federal Ministry of Education to boost funding for indigenous languages. The monarch warned of a steady decline in the use of native tongues in schools. He noted that students grasp concepts more easily when lessons are delivered in their mother tongue. Describing Yoruba as one of Africa’s richest languages, he called for new policies to promote knowledge acquisition through local languages. He also highlighted a shortage of qualified Yoruba teachers across institutions. The donation will support research to develop Yoruba terminology for modern objects and concepts.
