Chombo Unveils Malawi U-20 Squad for Crucial Falconets Qualifier

Malawi head coach Maggie Chombo has named a 26-player squad for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final qualifying round against Nigeria’s Falconets, according to local reports. The team begins camp today at Mpira Village in Blantyre. The first leg in Nigeria kicks off on Saturday, May 2, with the return fixture set for one week later at Bingu National Stadium. Nigeria’s Falconets, coached by Moses Aduku, reached this stage after a 3-2 aggregate victory over Senegal. The two-legged winner will secure a place at the 2026 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. Chombo has retained most of the side that defeated Guinea-Bissau. The squad features players from top local clubs including Silver Striker Ladies, Ascent Soccer Academy and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

I'm not convinced that packing a huge squad guarantees better results, na quality over quantity matters more in high-stakes qualifiers.

Focusing training sessions on set-piece defense and quick transitions could help Malawi surprise the Falconets in the first leg.
