APM and NDC Under Fire for Sharing National Legal Adviser in Potential Electoral Act Breach
NDRA has warned that listing Reuben Egwuaba as National Legal Adviser to both the Allied Peoples Movement and the Nigeria Democratic Congress may breach the revised Electoral Act, which bans dual party membership. The civil group pointed to “disturbing inconsistencies” in official records, including one listing reportedly backed by a court order. It stressed that the role demands exclusive party allegiance. The group highlighted Section 77 of the Electoral Act, noting that simultaneous membership in two parties carries a fine of up to ₦10 million or up to two years’ imprisonment. NDRA called on both parties and electoral regulators to clarify the records and correct any errors without delay. It urged a prompt investigation to uphold the rule of law. The organisation warned that political parties must not become safe havens for legal contradictions. It concluded that Nigeria’s democracy depends on established rules over political convenience.
