MC Oluomo Says His Practical Knowledge Outshines University Graduates

MC Oluomo says his life experience and street knowledge outshine university degrees. He made the remarks at Islamic singer Hafsat Adegoke’s 50th birthday celebration and album launch in Alausa, Lagos. Fuji star Saheed Osupa and other dignitaries attended. Reflecting on his teenage years, he described working as a bus conductor from noon to evening. He earned money for his mother’s upkeep and still watched Indian movies at Danjuma Cinema. He emphasised that his leadership of the transport union resulted from hands-on dedication, not formal schooling. He pointed to his children’s professional success abroad – a doctor, a lawyer and an engineer – as proof he values education. He also criticised fathers who abandon their families, calling such neglect ‘the mark of an enemy of God’.

True, practical know-how counts a lot, but don't disciplines like medicine or engineering still need formal studies?

I'm not convinced street knowledge always beats university training – some careers demand specific theories and research skills only taught on campus.

Combining hands-on experience with targeted courses or certifications might be the best path to competitive advantage in both street-level and corporate settings.
