Are Employers in Nigeria Setting Unrealistic Standards for Fresh Graduates?

I’ve noticed many entry-level roles demand 3–5 years of experience, mastery of multiple software tools, project management skills and professional certifications — yet salaries barely cover transport and meals. Fresh graduates already face disrupted studies, economic hardship, poor infrastructure and few internship opportunities. At the same time, businesses argue they can’t afford lengthy training and need people who deliver from day one. Is the gap between university education and workplace expectations too wide? Should companies invest more in internships and graduate schemes? Should universities focus on practical skills like digital literacy and problem-solving? How can both sides meet halfway to bridge this divide?

It seems like employers are prioritizing polished resumes over real potential, even if their budgets only cover basic living costs.

Expecting fresh graduates to arrive fully certified and multilingual on industry software seems unrealistic given budget and training constraints.
