My Concerns About How Revealing Summer Fashion Has Become

My Concerns About How Revealing Summer Fashion Has Become — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I think it is easier to practise modesty in Nigeria than in the UK, especially during summer. In winter, people dress to protect themselves from the cold. But when the weather gets warmer, I often feel that many outfits become far too revealing. From my own observation, summer fashion in the UK now includes very short tops, tight leggings, short skirts, and outfits that leave little to the imagination. I sometimes struggle with how normal this has become, and I worry about the effect it has on attitudes, self-control, and public behaviour. I also believe environment shapes culture. At a recent birthday party, I even hesitated to share my photos because of the outfits some women wore. Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I still believe there is beauty in modesty, and that not everything that can be revealed should be revealed.

Do you think the issue is mainly weather, or has fashion itself just moved further away from modesty?

Which part concerns you more: personal comfort in hot weather or the changing expectations around coverage?

It does seem easier to keep modest dress in colder months, while summer naturally pushes lighter and sometimes more revealing outfits.

Still, not every lighter outfit is immodest; comfort and personal style also matter, depending on the setting.

Maybe the better approach is choosing breathable clothes that stay tasteful, instead of treating hot weather as a free pass.
