Adepoju Hails DR Congo’s Historic World Cup Debut, Urges Nigeria to Learn

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has praised DR Congo for their 1–0 win over Jamaica in the intercontinental play-off. He hailed Axel Tuanzebe’s extra-time strike that sealed Congo’s first-ever World Cup finals spot. Speaking after the match, Adepoju told a sports outlet he was disappointed Nigeria missed out on the 2026 tournament in Mexico, the USA and Canada. He urged Nigerian football authorities to take more serious and proactive steps after the loss to Congo. He also noted FIFA’s decision to dismiss Nigeria’s protest against DR Congo due to a late and unpaid petition. Adepoju remains optimistic that valuable lessons will emerge from this setback.

It's impressive for DR Congo, but we shouldn't overlook the fact that they faced a Jamaica side short on form.

I'm not convinced that Nigeria's situation mirrors DR Congo's, considering different group challenges and football infrastructures.

Nigeria should focus on solid defence and set-piece routines just like Congo did to secure their landmark win.
