Presidency Rejects Viral Claim That Tinubu Promised 24-Hour Electricity
The presidency has dismissed Peter Obi’s assertion that President Bola Tinubu pledged round-the-clock power supply during the 2023 campaign. It calls the allegation a misrepresentation of his comments. Obi urged Tinubu to resign over mounting insecurity, erratic electricity and deepening economic hardship. He cited the resignation of UK Labour leader Keir Starmer as an example of taking responsibility when expectations are unmet. Obi also reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s demand for former President Jonathan’s exit during the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping. He argued that despite promises on power, security and welfare, conditions have deteriorated since 2023. In response, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s information adviser, noted Nigeria’s fixed-term presidential system differs from the UK’s parliamentary model. He said Nigerians will judge Tinubu’s performance at the 2027 election.
