El Chapo’s Latest Plea: Transfer from US Prison to Mexico
Drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán filed a handwritten request in New York’s Eastern District court seeking extradition back to Mexico. He claims his trial violated procedural rights and that crucial evidence in his favor was never presented. Dated April 23 and submitted pro se on May 1, the letter invokes equity principles and argues pending appeals should trigger a new trial. Guzmán also urges U.S.–Mexico cooperation to move him to his home country to face charges there. Convicted in Brooklyn in February 2019 on ten counts—including drug trafficking, money laundering and firearms offenses—Guzmán received life plus 30 years and forfeiture of over $12 billion. He is now held under extreme isolation at ADX Florence, Colorado.
