Abuja Residents Urge Monthly Sanitation Drives and Free Mosquito Nets to Curb Malaria
Residents of the Federal Capital Territory are calling on the government to reinstate monthly environmental sanitation exercises and broaden access to insecticide-treated mosquito nets. They say these measures would cut mosquito breeding sites and lower malaria cases across communities. Community members from Kubwa to Dei Dei highlighted worsening waste buildup and stagnant water after routine clean-up days were suspended. Many low-income families struggle to buy nets and insecticides, they added, making subsidised or free distribution essential for protection. A physician at Kubwa General Hospital stressed that combined environmental control and widespread use of treated nets are proven strategies for reducing malaria transmission. As Nigeria marks World Malaria Day, residents and health experts renew their appeal for stronger prevention efforts.
