The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Lagos Branch, recently toured three major firms along the Lagos–Sagamu Expressway to boost collaboration and professional development. The delegation visited XCMG Nigeria Company Ltd., SINOTRUK and CBC Global Civil and Building Construction Nigeria Ltd. At XCMG, the Branch Chair commended management’s support, highlighting a ₦5 million donation that has enriched the society’s activities. She praised the company’s commitment to durable equipment and technology transfer, noting its willingness to train local engineers. The NSE plans to send ten student engineers for six-month attachments and recommend graduate engineers for further training and potential employment. This initiative forms part of the society’s continuous professional development programme to expose members to hands-on industry experience. XCMG’s General Manager welcomed the delegation, detailing the firm’s 20-plus years in Nigeria with over 120 Nigerian staff. He emphasized the company’s dedication to quality machinery and local skills development through training and technical exchange.

It's interesting the tour focused on heavy equipment firms, but I wonder if smaller local contractors were overlooked in this collaboration push.

I'm not convinced such corporate tours guarantee meaningful professional development without clear follow-up projects or measurable outcomes.

A structured mentorship program between engineers and these companies could sustain skills transfer beyond a single site visit.
