NBS Reports Garri Drops Below ₦1,000 Amid National Food Price Decline
The National Bureau of Statistics reports significant year-on-year declines in staple food prices for April 2026. White garri fell by nearly 40% to an average of ₦809 per kg, while brown beans dropped by 44.9% to ₦1,339 per kg. Tomatoes and onions also recorded annual declines, though both rose slightly from March. Fresh ginger bucked the trend, rising by 12.3% to ₦5,582 per kg. Prices varied sharply by state. Bayelsa had the highest tomato price at ₦1,601 per kg, while Plateau offered the lowest at ₦730. Abia recorded the highest garri cost at ₦1,075, compared with ₦518 in Plateau. Despite these declines, food inflation remains elevated at 16.06% in April, down from 24.68% last year. The agency warns that rising costs for items such as millet, yam flour and beef continue to influence overall food prices.
