Dozens Missing After Colombian Air Force Hercules C-130 Crashes Near Amazon Border

A Lockheed Martin Hercules C-130 transport plane from the Colombian Air Force crashed shortly after takeoff on March 23 near Puerto Leguízamo, close to the Peruvian border. The aircraft was carrying 125 people, including military personnel. Rescue teams have pulled around 57 survivors to safety, while more than 50 remain unaccounted for. Local footage showed thick plumes of smoke rising just three kilometres from the town. Colombian Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez described the incident as a “tragic accident” and confirmed that investigations into the cause are under way. President Gustavo Petro expressed his hope for no fatalities and criticised bureaucratic delays hindering military modernisation.
