House Rep Urges Tinubu to Suspend Controversial NYSC Reforms
Hon. Philip Agbese has asked President Bola Tinubu to pause the Federal Executive Council’s sweeping NYSC reforms. In a leaked private letter, he warned that framing these changes as “innovation” risks undermining the scheme’s core mission of national unity. He described moves like civilian leadership and skills-based deployment as sources of social and security fragmentation. Agbese criticised seven major pillars, including a six-week orientation camp and replacing the khaki uniform with regional Adire fabric. He argued that such changes could erode blind geographic postings and encourage ethnic silos. He urged the president to convene a multi-disciplinary expert committee for a thorough review. He stressed the NYSC’s historic role in forging a shared civic identity and called for reforms that strengthen, not dismantle, national cohesion.
