Juju Legend Y.K. Ajao Dies at 72: Industry Mourns the ‘Makosa King’

Veteran juju musician Y.K. Ajao, fondly called the “Makosa King,” has died at 72. Details about the cause of his death have not been released. His passing sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans. Juju star Sir Shina Peters paid an emotional tribute, calling Ajao more than a colleague but a brother whose music will live on. Born in Iseyin, Oyo State, Ajao launched his career in Ibadan and later formed the Professional Brothers Band. He rose to prominence with his Makosa Series 1 and 2 albums, blending traditional juju rhythms with broader African influences. Ajao was honoured by industry icons like King Sunny Ade and played a key role in sustaining Nigeria’s rich music heritage through performance, research, and mentorship.

Ajao's recordings deserve preservation; local radio stations should curate a special segment for his classics to inspire new listeners.
