Six Nigerians, Including Retired Major General, Charged with Treason in Alleged Independence Day Coup Plot
Six people have been charged with treason for allegedly planning to overthrow President Bola Tinubu during last year’s Independence Day celebrations. The charges, filed by the Attorney General at the Federal High Court in Abuja, include terrorism and money laundering. Defendants include a retired major general, a serving police inspector and an Islamic cleric. A former governor and oil minister is named but remains at large. Rumours of the plot emerged in October 2025 when the government cancelled the 65th Independence Day parade, citing security threats. Earlier this year, the military announced that officers would face court-martial over similar allegations. Under Nigerian law, treason carries severe penalties, including life imprisonment. The armed forces have maintained their loyalty to civilian rule since 1999, emphasising their commitment to democracy.
