UNIZIK Pre-Degree Centre Shines with Solar-Powered Classrooms and New Facilities

UNIZIK Pre-Degree Centre Shines with Solar-Powered Classrooms and New Facilities — 1 of 4
1 / 4

The Pre-Degree Study Centre at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Mbaukwu, has seen a major transformation over the past year. Under Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie’s leadership, the centre now boasts 100 solar-powered streetlights, solar lighting for classrooms and inverters to support night lessons and device charging. A new kitchen, modern conveniences and water reticulation with showers and flush toilets have replaced the old, inadequate facilities. These upgrades promise improved hygiene and comfort for students attending the centre. The application process is now fully digital, speeding up admissions to the Pre-Degree programme. Staff welfare also received a boost, with increased honoraria for teachers and higher wages for casual workers. Looking ahead, the centre will introduce the JUPEB programme this September. With nearly 2,000 students expected, Prof. Okolie believes these improvements will elevate academic performance and benefit the surrounding community.

Has the shift to solar-powered classrooms improved evening study habits or reduced costs at the Pre-Degree Centre this past year?

I agree the solar-powered classrooms should make evening sessions more comfortable while lowering the Centre's utility expenses.

Installing 100 solar streetlights and lighting for classrooms sounds impressive, though ongoing maintenance and inverter lifespan could be a real challenge.

Proper management and scheduled service checks usually keep solar inverters running beyond their expected lifespan.

While solar lights are nice, perhaps the centre should prioritise hiring more tutors and improving teaching materials first.

Abeg, set small weekly rota for inverter charging and test solar lights every weekend so students no go stumble at night.
