House to Probe Sharp Drop in Farm Produce Prices, Urge Support for Farmers

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the persistent decline in farm produce prices and its impact on farmers’ livelihoods, food security and nutrition. Lawmakers are calling on the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and relevant agencies to design and implement urgent remedial measures. They propose structured commodity off-taking systems, price support mechanisms and the expansion of storage, processing and market infrastructure, including strategic grain reserves and agro-processing zones. A federal lawmaker who moved the motion warned that falling prices for staples like cassava, rice and yam have led to heavy losses for farmers who depend on loans to cover input costs. Without prompt intervention, the trend could drive farmers out of business, reduce agricultural investment and worsen national food shortages.
