Is Open Banking Giving Apps Permanent Access to Your Finances?

Is Open Banking Giving Apps Permanent Access to Your Finances?

Many of us have clicked "Allow" when linking our bank to a finance app and then moved on. What you may not know is that permission can remain active indefinitely. That app could still be reading your data right now. Open Banking lets you authorise your bank to share your account balance, transaction history and income patterns with third-party services. In Nigeria, the Central Bank’s new framework makes consent explicit, revocable and transparent. But forgotten permissions mean old apps may still hold keys to your financial profile. You can protect yourself by reviewing and revoking access. Check each app’s permissions, set time limits and resist blanket "Allow All" requests. Treat your financial data like the asset it is.

Has anyone checked how long finance apps keep reading bank data after they've been granted access?

I'm with you—wonder if these finance apps really keep tabs on our accounts forever after we unlock them?

You're right, I've been thinking the same. This open banking access sure no dey expire once you grant permission.

It seems like the permission never really expires, so apps might still pull your transaction history years after you stop using them.

I doubt most apps risk misuse of old data when they actually want users to reauthorize access periodically.

To be safe, review your linked apps in your banking settings and revoke access from any services you no longer use.
