Anambra CP Blames Improper Storage for Onitsha Headbridge Market Fire

Anambra CP Blames Improper Storage for Onitsha Headbridge Market Fire — 1 of 4
1 / 4

By Izunna Okafor, Awka Anambra State Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu visited the Plumbing Materials Market at Headbridge, Onitsha, to console traders affected by the recent blaze. He pledged the Command’s support as investigations into the incident continue. Preliminary findings indicate that heat from stored inflammable materials, especially plastic pipes, may have sparked the fire. Non-compliance with basic safety measures likely allowed the flames to spread rapidly through the crowded market. The commissioner assured traders of increased patrols to prevent looting and other crimes. He also lauded the prompt action of the Fire Service and emergency agencies for containing the fire and preventing any loss of life. He urged traders and market leaders to strengthen safety practices and work closely with security and emergency services. He stressed that prevention remains the best safeguard against future disasters and financial losses.

Absolutely, traders must store items on secure shelving, maintain clear aisles, and have fire extinguishers ready in case of emergencies.

Blaming traders for securing wares seems off. Shouldn't authorities beef up security patrols first?

While pledges of support sound promising, without transparent follow up on findings, traders may be left facing the same risks again.

Market associations should schedule safety training and coordinate with fire services for routine inspections to prevent future incidents.
