Film Lab Africa 2 Launches in Nigeria to Train Emerging Filmmakers and Storytellers

Film Lab Africa 2 Launches in Nigeria to Train Emerging Filmmakers and Storytellers — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The British Council has opened applications for Film Lab Africa 2, a collaborative accelerator with EbonyLife Creative Academy and Iconic Steps. Building on its 2023 debut—when 60 creators were chosen from over 600 applicants—this year’s programme offers virtual and in-person training, mentorship and production grants leading to festival and industry showcases. New features include a dedicated writers’ lab and an expanded focus on TV pilot development. Participants still benefit from script support, director and producer workshops, financing for pilot shoots and networking events with investors and distributors. Open to Nigerians aged 18–35 in all 36 states, the scheme combines online courses, a writers’ residency and accessible provisions for persons with disabilities. It aims to strengthen local talent pipelines and boost Nigeria–UK cultural collaboration.

I suppose the mix of local insights and resources could help, though I'm curious about the real impact.

It's interesting that only 60 out of 600 creators got chosen last year; selection seems extremely competitive for virtual and in-person slots.

I wonder if focusing on established institutions limits diversity of stories from grassroots or less connected creatives.

Applications require thoughtful storytelling samples; start preparing concise pitches and detailed project outlines well before the deadline.
