SWAN Raises Alarm Over Anambra Sports Commission’s Merger into Youth Ministry

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria in Anambra has expressed shock at Governor Soludo’s decision to dissolve the Anambra Sports Development Commission and fold it back into the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports. In a statement, SWAN argued that sports have grown into a standalone industry, pointing to national and state sports commissions. The association warned that administering sports as a department could hinder growth and urged the government to provide political backing, funding for infrastructure, grassroots programmes and coach training. SWAN also voiced confidence in Patrick Aghamba, the nominee for Commissioner of Youth Development and Sports, citing his previous experience. The body pledged to work with the ministry to advance policies that will restore Anambra’s place on the national sports map.
