Segun Odegbami: African Teams Are Ready to Lift the World Cup Trophy

Segun Odegbami: African Teams Are Ready to Lift the World Cup Trophy — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami says African sides have shown enough quality at the 2026 World Cup to make winning football’s biggest prize a real possibility. Odegbami praised the performances of Morocco, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Cape Verde during the group stage. He also applauded Ghana’s disciplined display against England and commended DR Congo for their work ethic under pressure. While acknowledging that Senegal faced one of the toughest groups and struggled to progress, Odegbami insists no African nation should be underestimated. “Winning the World Cup is now within sight and touching distance,” he declared. Odegbami remains one of Nigeria’s greatest football icons. He starred at the 1978 and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and helped the Green Eagles win Nigeria’s first AFCON title in 1980.
