Nigerian Passport Rises to 89th Place in 2026 Henley Index

Nigerian Passport Rises to 89th Place in 2026 Henley Index

The Nigerian passport has climbed to 89th position out of 199 in the 2026 Henley Passport Index. The annual ranking uses exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association and expert analysis. Last July, Nigeria hit its highest spot in five years at 88th but slipped to 94th by the end of the year. Nigeria now shares 89th place with Myanmar, securing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 44 destinations. Across Africa, Nigeria ranks just above the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, Libya, and Eritrea. Seychelles leads the continent, while Singapore tops the global list with access to 192 countries.

I doubt say this small rise really changes travel hassle at airports; visa processes still hold most Nigerians back.

Focusing on diplomatic negotiations and digital visa applications seems a practical step to boost that passport rank and streamline entry processes abroad.
