From 1993 Mercedes Scandal to 2026 Abuja Mansions: Are Nigerian Judges Losing Their Independence?

Naija is the only country we have. But at the rate things are changing, our courts may soon bow openly to the executive and legislature. In 1993, an allegation of a single Mercedes Benz gift prompted nine Supreme Court justices to sue for libel and recuse themselves. They understood that even the appearance of bias could destroy public trust. Today, the FCTA and Presidency are building luxury five-bedroom duplexes in Katampe for Federal High Court, Court of Appeal and FCT High Court judges. Reports say these homes will become personal property, even after retirement. Can Nigerians trust judges to rule against the government when the executive is also processing their retirement mansion titles? True independence demands fair compensation and official residences held by the judiciary itself, not permanent assets from the state.
