What It Was Like Growing Up in Nigeria in the 1970s and 80s
Would you press a button to return to the 70s and 80s? My mum said she would in an instant. She described life then as a completely different world. School started at six after a simple test. There were no smartphones, social media, or internet. Games like suwe, ten-ten and boju boju filled our days. We ran barefoot on dusty streets until the sun set and fetched water from hand-dug wells. Evenings meant gathering around NTA until it signed off for the night. Chalk and slates were our first “textbooks” before notebooks arrived. A naira note could buy far more, and kobo coins still had real value. I turned these stories into a short documentary through a child’s eyes. If you grew up in that era or heard tales from your parents, I’d love to hear your memories.
