NYC Mayor Mulls Arrest of Netanyahu at UN Summit

NYC Mayor Mulls Arrest of Netanyahu at UN Summit

New York’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has suggested he might order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he attends the UN General Assembly this September. Mamdani argues Netanyahu belongs in The Hague, calling him a war criminal charged by the International Criminal Court. He admits uncertainty over his legal authority to direct the NYPD in detaining a foreign leader but says he’s consulting the city’s legal team. The mayor has previously labeled Israel an “apartheid regime” and vowed to enforce ICC arrest warrants against figures like Netanyahu and Vladimir Putin. Israel’s UN ambassador and Netanyahu have strongly criticized Mamdani, accusing him of ignoring rising antisemitism and using headlines to attack Israel. They maintain Netanyahu will address the assembly with pride and insist criticism won’t derail his trip.

It's surprising a mayor claims jurisdiction over a foreign head of state; usually such charges go through international courts, not city administrations.

Arresting a prime minister on local soil feels more like political theater than a realistic legal move, not benefiting diplomatic relations at all.

If authorities really want accountability, they could coordinate with the International Criminal Court rather than relying solely on municipal powers.
