Ortega Delays Nicaraguan Elections to 2027, Accuses Opposition of Colluding with US

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has ruled out holding elections before 2027. He says he will not allow opposition groups to take power through the ballot box. Speaking at the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution in Managua, the 80-year-old leader accused his opponents of plotting with the United States. He urged supporters to “forget” about winning polls against his government. Constitutional reforms passed last year extended the presidential term from five to six years, pushing the next vote back. Opposition figures, many in exile, hope international pressure will force a more open electoral process. Critics say Ortega and his wife have dominated Nicaragua’s politics for nearly two decades. The government faced global condemnation after a violent crackdown on protests in 2018, when the UN reports more than 300 people were killed.

Local and international observers should monitor legal proceedings closely to ensure no further erosion of Nicaragua's electoral framework.
