Tinubu Proposes State Police Constitutional Amendment, Bill Read in Senate

Tinubu Proposes State Police Constitutional Amendment, Bill Read in Senate

President Tinubu has transmitted a constitutional amendment bill to the Senate proposing the establishment of state police. The move is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture by allowing states to set up and manage their own police forces alongside the federal service. Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the June 15 communication during plenary and referred the bill to the constitutional review committee with instructions to report back on Wednesday. If approved, the amendment will shift policing responsibilities to a dual structure involving federal and state forces. Akpabio explained that implementation will occur in phases through a constitutional alteration followed by Acts of Parliament. He emphasised safeguards to prevent abuse and noted that empowering local governments, municipalities and communities will help detect and report suspicious activities more quickly.
