NARD Suspends Nationwide Strike, Sets April 21 Deadline for Govt Action
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called off its indefinite strike and ordered members to resume work at 8 am Wednesday. This follows federal government assurances on the disputed Professional Allowance Table (PAT). NARD’s leadership, headed by Dr. Mohammed Usman Suleiman, warned that a fresh strike would begin if the government fails to meet its demands by April 21. These include payment of 19 months’ allowance arrears, salary and promotion backlogs, release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, and implementation of specialist allowances. The new PAT was agreed after a 2025 industrial action but its rollout was delayed twice before provoking the April 7 walkout. The association stresses that these measures are essential for a functional public health system. With two weeks remaining, both parties face pressure to break the recurring cycle of strikes.
