Visa Delays Force Nigeria Out of 2026 Flag Football World Championships

Visa Delays Force Nigeria Out of 2026 Flag Football World Championships

Nigeria has withdrawn its men’s and women’s teams from the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany, after the athletes were unable to obtain visas before the tournament. Both teams qualified after winning the men’s and women’s titles at the 2025 IFAF Africa Flag Football Championships. The International Federation of American Football, the National Sports Commission and the Nigerian Federation of American Football said efforts to resolve the travel issues did not succeed in time. Nigeria’s group-stage opponents will receive automatic victories, as replacement teams cannot be brought in at this stage. However, both teams can still pursue qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through the 2027 IFAF Continental Championships.

Do we know whether the delays affected travel arrangements, player preparation, or both teams' ability to participate?

It is especially disappointing that both the men's and women's teams earned their places, only to miss the championships.

True, but the bigger issue seems to be the delays, not whether either team deserved their spot.

Qualification alone is not enough; international tournament planning has to treat visa timelines as seriously as preparation on the field.

The federation should begin visa documentation immediately after qualification and keep a clear process for athletes ahead of future events.
