Silent Threat of Hospital Malnutrition: WASPEN to Host 5th Clinical Nutrition Conference in Asaba

Silent Threat of Hospital Malnutrition: WASPEN to Host 5th Clinical Nutrition Conference in Asaba

The West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition has warned that hospital malnutrition remains a hidden but deadly challenge undermining patient recovery and driving up healthcare costs across Nigeria. The society will hold its 5th Annual Clinical Nutrition Conference from June 22–25, 2026 at Federal Medical Centre Asaba. The event will focus on sustainable nutrition services, with special sessions on neonatal and paediatric support. Health experts will discuss evidence on screening gaps, team-based interventions and cost impacts. Over 300 professionals from Nigeria and beyond are expected. Key guests include Delta State’s governor, the Coordinating Minister of Health, international nutrition scientists and traditional leaders. WASPEN calls on government and hospital authorities to prioritise routine nutrition screening, multidisciplinary support teams and funding for advanced therapies to curb malnutrition’s clinical and economic toll.

While conferences sound promising, I worry they focus on presentations rather than practical changes on the ward.

Hospitals could start simple nutrition screenings at admission, train staff on early intervention, and monitor patients' dietary needs daily to curb malnutrition.
