Court Directs UI to Reinstate 3 Students Suspended for Fee Hike Protest
The Federal High Court in Ibadan has ordered the University of Ibadan to reinstate three students who were suspended for four semesters after protesting a hike in school fees on May 13, 2024. The suit was filed against the institution and its vice chancellor over alleged violations of the students’ right to fair hearing. Delivering judgment, Justice Nkeonye Maha ruled that the disciplinary committee’s decision was invalid. She found no evidence that the peaceful protest disrupted the inauguration of the new student union executives. The court declared that the students’ suspension was null and void. It directed the university to restore their full studentship from the date of suspension and barred any further disciplinary action on the matter.
