Ex-Arsenal Midfielder Santi Cazorla Retires at 41 After Inspiring Comeback
Santi Cazorla has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 41. The former Spain international won two FA Cups with Arsenal and lifted the European Championship twice with his national side. His career nearly ended in 2016 when he developed gangrene after surgery. After 11 operations, he made a remarkable recovery and even returned to play three seasons at his boyhood club, Real Oviedo. In a social media video, Cazorla reflected on hanging up his boots “at home,” grateful for a fitting end to his journey. Real Oviedo have offered him a role at the club and praised his commitment. He returned to Oviedo on minimum salary and donated his image rights to support the youth academy, with 10% of jersey sales funding the next generation of players. Cazorla’s career began at Villarreal after leaving Oviedo’s youth setup. He later starred for Recreativo de Huelva, earning Spain’s Footballer of the Year, before joining Arsenal in 2012. In his debut season in London, he provided 13 assists and was named Arsenal Player of the Season.
