Don’t Tear Your Marriage Certificate — Here’s Why
You may have seen the video of a couple tearing what they called their marriage certificate. That paper is not the government-issued document. Official marriage certificates are rectangular, printed in black or green ink, and carry the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s seal. What they destroyed was likely a village-made replica. Remember that any document bearing the coat of arms belongs to the federal government. As a custodian, you cannot legally destroy passports, banknotes, IDs or official certificates. Damaging these items could lead to fines or even jail. Perhaps they tore the paper to show they would never divorce. But marriage goes far beyond a piece of paper. It thrives when two people work together every day. Tearing a certificate won’t save a relationship without real effort. Beyond legal proof, what other uses do you think a marriage certificate serves?
