Court Grants NGO Leave to Force Reinvestigation of Mohbad’s Death

Court Grants NGO Leave to Force Reinvestigation of Mohbad’s Death

The Federal High Court in Abuja has allowed an NGO to apply for a mandamus order compelling the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner to reopen the probe into musician Mohbad’s death. In a ruling on an ex-parte motion, Justice James Omotosho directed the police to interview all persons last seen with the singer—including his wife, close associates, and his father—and to arrest and charge anyone found responsible if evidence warrants. The case, filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, was adjourned to May 4 for hearing. The NGO argued the initial police investigation was incomplete despite widespread public outcry and petitions for a fresh, unbiased review.

While forcing a reinvestigation sounds proactive, it could tie up resources in court instead of letting detectives gather fresh leads directly.

Monitor the official court order and subsequent filings, then note any updates from the IGP or Lagos Commissioner.
