US Lawmaker Urges Tinubu to Overhaul Defence Leadership and Redeploy Matawalle
US State Representative Kimberly Daniels has called for a major shake-up of Nigeria’s defence leadership at the United World Congress of Diplomats. She urged President Bola Tinubu to remove or redeploy the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, amid a rising wave of deadly attacks across the country. Daniels condemned recent Palm Sunday and Easter killings in Plateau, Nasarawa, Kaduna and other states. She described the incidents as a “deepening failure” of Nigeria’s security architecture and warned that political assurances alone are no longer enough. Her recommendations include a transparent investigation into alleged high-level complicity with bandit groups, stronger protection measures for communities in the North-Central and North-West regions, and an immediate leadership review at the defence ministry. Daniels also appealed to the United States and allied partners to increase diplomatic pressure on Nigeria. In Florida, she co-sponsored a bipartisan House resolution condemning violence in Nigeria and supporting human rights and religious freedom concerns.
