World Athletics Blocks Ofili’s Switch to Türkiye as AFN Welcomes Her Home

World Athletics Blocks Ofili’s Switch to Türkiye as AFN Welcomes Her Home

World Athletics has refused to approve Favour Ofili’s request to change her allegiance to Türkiye. Her application was one of eleven submitted under a government-backed recruitment drive ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The governing body ruled that the scheme undermined the integrity of national competitions, discouraged homegrown talent, and put local athletes at risk. It said lucrative contracts were distorting fair play. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has since welcomed Ofili back into its fold. Its president praised her as one of Nigeria’s brightest sprint stars and called for unity around her. Officials now say their focus is on giving her the love, support, and environment she needs. They believe renewed backing from fans and stakeholders can help her reach her full potential on the global stage.

It seems odd that a government-backed scheme would be deemed undermining the sport's integrity after eleven similar applications.

Blocking her transfer might discourage talent development, but maybe World Athletics feared setting a risky precedent.

Perhaps the AFN could advocate for clearer transfer rules and collaborate with World Athletics to prevent future disputes.
