Phil Giles on Onyeka’s Permanent Move to Coventry City

Phil Giles on Onyeka’s Permanent Move to Coventry City

Brentford’s director of football explains why Frank Onyeka’s switch to Coventry City made sense for all parties. Phil Giles says Onyeka showed great commitment but needed more first-team action. After joining Coventry on loan in February, the Nigeria international helped the Sky Blues win the Championship and earn promotion to the Premier League. Onyeka made nine appearances for Brentford before his loan. He originally signed from FC Midtjylland in 2021, played regularly in his first season and later spent a season on loan at Augsburg. Giles adds that Frank will always be welcome back at Brentford and wishes him well for the upcoming season in England’s top flight.

Do you think Onyeka's Coventry City loan minutes will boost his readiness to challenge for Brentford's midfield spots next season?

Absolutely, those extra Coventry minutes should help him gel and gain match sharpness ahead of next season at Brentford.

It's interesting that Giles frames Onyeka's move as natural, yet it highlights how crowded Brentford's midfield has become.

I'm not convinced Coventry's midfield battles will offer more clarity on Onyeka's progress than staying and rotating at Brentford.

If the plan is to sharpen Onyeka's match fitness, regular starts at Coventry could be the key step before any future return to Brentford duties.
