Global Condom Manufacturer Plans 30% Price Hike, Sparks Online Stockpiling Debate

Global Condom Manufacturer Plans 30% Price Hike, Sparks Online Stockpiling Debate

Global condom maker Karex has announced plans for a 30% price increase as conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt supplies. The warning has ignited a social media debate in China under the hashtag “condom prices rising,” with millions weighing in. Many users expressed concern that higher costs could influence personal and family planning choices. Some advised stocking up early, arguing that the cost of condoms is still far less than raising a child. Others stressed that price hikes won’t deter purchases, highlighting the importance of preventing unintended pregnancies. “A few dozen yuan for a condom is far more cost-effective than raising a child,” one comment read. The move follows the removal of a long-standing tax exemption on contraceptives in China. Authorities there are also introducing measures to tackle a record-low birth rate and an ageing population.

It's surprising that supply disruptions automatically trigger a full 30 percent hike instead of phased or smaller adjustments.

I'm not convinced rushing to stockpile condoms is the best response when availability might stabilize soon.

A more reliable plan could involve budgeting condom purchases monthly and looking for local brands less affected by global supply issues.
