Police Halt UNICAL Chapel Service Over Leadership Dispute
Police halted Sunday service at the University of Calabar's Chapel of Redemption after a dispute over control of the chapel raised fears of violence. The tension began when a university caretaker committee and an interim chaplain appointed by the Vice-Chancellor allegedly moved to take charge of a service led by the chapel's Chaplain, Rev. Joseph Ushie. Police said allowing the service to continue could have led to a breakdown of law and order. The parties have been invited for a meeting with the Cross River State Police Command. The dispute is also before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, which reportedly restrained the university management and its agents from interfering with the chapel's activities pending further hearing on August 20.
