AIRS Dismisses Five Corrupt Enforcers, Shields Transport Operators

AIRS Dismisses Five Corrupt Enforcers, Shields Transport Operators

In a bid to restore order in the transport sector, the Anambra Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has dismissed five enforcement officers for corrupt practices. The officers—Imo Okechukwu, Chibuzo Nwana (aka DPO), Anthony Anwuru (aka Timaya), Afamefuna Olinya and Ebere Anike (aka Holy Water)—were acting under a haulage revenue collection partnership but faced multiple allegations of double taxation, extortion, assault, theft and harassment. The directive, issued by AIRS’s Informal Sector Directorate and copied to the state police command, follows mounting complaints from commercial transport operators. AIRS warns that anyone found collecting haulage levies or enforcing compliance after the dismissal date will be arrested and prosecuted. This action aligns with Anambra State’s commitment to transparency and accountability. It is expected to relieve transport operators from illegal levies and intimidation, allowing them to operate without fear.

What measures will AIRS take to prevent similar corrupt practices from spreading to other revenue sectors?

Absolutely. Strengthening audits and clear accountability channels should keep other sectors safe from corrupt tactics.

Dismissing five officers might look like progress, but it doesn't address the systemic issues enabling corruption among transport enforcers.

I'm not convinced firing them alone will shield operators, corruption often finds new ways without stricter oversight.

Operators should document every interaction with enforcers and report irregular fees directly to AIRS through official channels.
