How Autism Shapes Personal Style: Three Nigerians on Sensory-Friendly Fashion and Creative Expression
In honour of Autism Awareness Month, we spoke to three young Nigerians on the autism spectrum about how their sensory experiences shape their relationship with fashion, style, and beauty. Z, a 26-year-old makeup artist and ADHD advocate, treats beauty as her personal art form. She avoids textures that irritate her skin and experiments with colour palettes inspired by everyday life to communicate mood and identity. Remi, 27, views clothing as an extension of his interests—like music or comics. His instinctual approach blends masculine and feminine elements without careful planning, prioritising authenticity over trends or social expectations. Zia, 25, focuses on comfort and practicality. She favours airy fabrics, uniform dressing, and organised shopping to support her sensory needs. Her style shows how texture, fit, and structure can make fashion inclusive for neurodiverse consumers.
