Workers Picket AEDC HQ as Tony Elumelu’s Transcorp Faces Major Crisis

Workers Picket AEDC HQ as Tony Elumelu’s Transcorp Faces Major Crisis

Over 900 employees of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) joined the Nigeria Labour Congress in a protest at the company’s headquarters. They accuse management of unfair labour practices following a recent restructuring. Transcorp Plc, led by Tony Elumelu, acquired a 60% stake in AEDC in August 2023 to settle an outstanding debt to UBA. Since the takeover, the utility has experienced management shake-ups and recurring operational challenges dubbed “one week, one trouble.” In November 2025, AEDC announced it would disengage over 900 staff as part of a transformation exercise. While management framed the move as efficiency-driven, workers and unions argue it was a cost-cutting response to the new national minimum wage. The protests have reignited debate over post-privatisation reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. Observers now question whether Transcorp’s intervention will deliver lasting stability or deepen existing challenges.

Absolutely. Joint mediation sessions and clear grievance channels would help calm tensions and show genuine willingness to resolve issues.

It's notable that over 900 AEDC staff joined the picket immediately after Transcorp's restructuring, yet there's no mention of any dialogue attempts by management.

I'm not convinced that picketing the HQ alone will pressure Transcorp; they might simply postpone talks and wait the protest out.

Workers could submit a formal list of grievances to management and involve the labour commission before staging any further demonstrations.
