FIFA Overlooks Nigeria Again in 2026 World Cup Referee List
The dream of seeing a Nigerian referee at the World Cup was deferred yet again. FIFA announced 52 match officials for 2026 but no Nigerian names made the cut. Nigeria boasts over 200 million people and a vibrant football heritage. Yet the country remains on the sidelines in global officiating. Recent CAF assignments show officials from Algeria, Egypt, Gabon, Morocco, Mauritania, South Africa and Somalia taking key slots. FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer emphasized a three-year "quality over quantity" approach. Officials were assessed in domestic and international games and attended elite seminars. Nigerian referees lacked enough exposure in late-stage CAF Champions League and AFCON matches to meet these standards. This omission must serve as a wake-up call for the Nigeria Football Federation and the NPFL. Until they invest in training and monitoring their referees, Nigeria will play the beautiful game but rarely call it on the world stage.
