Tinubu: Colonial Tax Laws Pushed Nigerians into Poverty
President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria’s old colonial-era tax framework weakened national prosperity. He made this point at the inauguration of the new 16-storey Nigeria Revenue Service headquarters in Abuja, where he argued that fragmentation and inconsistencies in the old system held the country back. He explained that the fully operational tax reforms introduced in January will replace outdated structures with a more inclusive, transparent and investment-friendly system. Tinubu praised the NRS chairman for delivering modern facilities for 3,000 staff, including a data centre, clinic and auditorium. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas backed the reforms, noting early signs of improved fiscal stability, stronger reserves and rising investor confidence. The president urged Nigerians to embrace the changes as key to long-term growth.
